“Let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you”
Claudia’s Story
Claudia Villavieja (“Chloe”) was born in Metro Manila, Philippines on November 13, 1996. She is the eldest of three and an only girl, followed by her two brothers Kristan and Zach. Overachieving from the beginning, she routinely received medals in her preschool years and graduated Valedictorian. Thereafter, her elementary school days in the prestigious academy of Colegio San Agustin were markedly less impressive. There, instead, she began to grow an appreciation for the fine arts, specifically the works of oil painters Monet and Van Gogh. After sixth grade, Claudia and her family immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia where she spent high school. During this time, she found an affinity and, albeit mediocre, talent in graphic art and design; more importantly, this is where Claudia met her lifelong friend and man of honour, Jett. In 2014, Claudia and her family moved to Edmonton, Alberta where Claudia would spend the next three years working at McDonald’s and dilly-dallying in and out of various post-secondary programs. In 2017, Claudia began a relationship with her coworker, Josiah, who convinced her to pursue nursing. During the pandemic, Claudia met the love of her life: a 6-week old black shorkie-poodle that she named Kafka, who would soon change her life. Claudia graduated her LPN program in 2022 and soon after started work at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, an experience she would not trade for a lifetime. She is currently also working at a private caregiving company that she absolutely loves. Still, Claudia always has a passion project to work on to make sure she never loses her creative side.
Josiah’s Story
Josiah Beauchesne was born on March 27, 1997, in a Minneapolis suburb. The second of three children, too late to be the oldest, to early to be the favourite. For the next three years, Josiah and his family bounced around the United States and Canada, before finally settling in Edmonton, which has been the longest stint to date. While in school, he made an effort to succeed while putting in the least amount of effort possible, coining phrases such as “studying is for cheaters”, a line that still reads as his quote in his 9th grade yearbook. At 14, fed up with a meager allowance, Josiah began working at McDonald’s, a job which taught him many valuable lessons such as how long you can hide in the cleaning closet until someone comes to find you, and how to pose for photos that would be sent to corporate. One lesson that he evidently did not learn, was when to leave, as he remained there for almost 7 years. Lucky for him, God sent an energetic manager determined to fire him, Claudia Villavieja. While she unsuccessful in getting him fired, she did teach him when it was time to leave, so in the last year of his accounting degree, he finally made the leap to unemployment. After finishing his accounting and law degrees, he landed a position at at small law frim with a specialization in family law, and stayed on after becoming a lawyer,. After speaking all day with clients who hate the ones they used to love, he has a unique perspective on relationships, if nothing else, what to avoid to stay happy. Despite this, he still finds a way to golf at least one too many times a week for Claudia to stay happy as well.
Our Story
They first met on what was meant to be an ordinary evening shift at Stony Plain Road, McDonald’s. Our protagonist, Claudia, had recently been promoted to Second Assistant Manager (for context, a rank above Josiah). As a result, she was required to transfer from a proper establishment to what one would call a “fixer-upper”. This was Claudia’s second day at this location and was enjoying a peaceful, smooth-running shift (obviously, because she was the one running it) when, like a bat out of hell, a strange man in a manager uniform comes barging through the doors and zooms past her. Claudia immediately follows him and he explains that his name is “Josiah” and he is supposed to be “running the shift today”, making a show of looking at the shift schedule. Our protagonist clarifies that this is impossible because she is running the shift, his name is clearly not on the schedule, and anyway, he’s already an hour late. He starts to argue back at her and our heroine, whose initial sense of alarm is now morphing into one of irritation, realizes what exactly is standing before her: the beginning of a f*cking headache. Sure enough, this was only the first of many unpleasant interactions to follow between the two, characterized by frequent eye-rolls, glares, and passive-aggressive condescension. Their disagreements were fuelled partly by her passion for excellence and his determination to deliver the opposite. More fundamentally, however, they really stemmed from only one major difference in opinion: who is in charge. Their hostility became so severe that Claudia would deliberately make their schedules so that they wouldn’t ever work together and, multiple times, encouraged her boss to fire him (alas! it slithers away!). Therefore, it was nothing short of a miracle when a year later, they started to form a bit of a friendship, mostly because he wore her down. Somewhere along the way, they began to date. During this time, he became a lawyer and she a nurse. Then, a week after their sixth-year anniversary, he put a ring on her finger. As she looks back on their relationship while typing this, Claudia surmises that a lot has changed between them since that fateful closing shift at McDonald’s; yet, one thing has not: he’s still her favourite headache.
